Lindrick Golf Club

Lindrick golf club is located between Sheffield and Worksop, just off the A57. The course is associated with the Yorkshire Golf Union. It was founded in 1891 with 9 holes originally. However, it was extended to 18 holes in 1894. Many people know the golf course has so-called save the Ryder Cup.

This is because 24 years prior to 1957, the USA had won the competition. The interest in the competition was wandering and just months before the competition start date, it was in need of a saviour.

Sir Stuart Goodwin, an industrialist from Yorkshire, took up the challenge. He had discovered golf later on in life while watching an exhibition match at Lindrick between British captain Dai Rees and Fred Daly.

The British PGA approached him to see if he would fund the forthcoming Ryder Cup, and in response, he agreed to make a donation of £10,000. His one condition? That the match is held at his home course: Lindrick Golf Club.

The Great Britain Team went on to beat the USA team. The Ryder Cup was saved.
